Breeders Cup 2017 – Day 2 Tips

There’s a fabulous card for day two of the Breeders Cup 2017 – and European interest starts in the Turf Sprint at the unusual post time of 7.37pm.

Turf Sprint

Lady Aurelia almost feels like a European contender such are the links she has with racing here and she will be hard to beat on a track that should really play to her strengths. The betting suggests she has most to fear from another filly, Marsha, but we prefer another raider from our side of the pond, WASHINGTON DC.

The O’Brien yard continues in sparkling form and the fast ground could be the key to this horse. He has the best jockey in the world on board and is worth risking at the prices.

Don’t rule out COTAI GLORY either. He is a bit of a monkey, but five furlongs around a bend might keep him focused and bring out the best in him.

The big danger to all could be Disco Partner who is interesting now down in trip to 5f for the first time.

Filly & Mare Turf

We think Europe can take the Filly & Mare Turf too and it is hard to choose between Senga, WUHEIDA and QUEENS TRUST. In the end, we have gone for Wuheida and Queens Trust, with the former pick interesting in cheek-pieces and back on a quick surface for the first time in a while.

Queens Trust won this for us last year, so we can’t abandon her. Again, the firm ground should see her improve on recent starts in Britain and France. There’s no one better at preparing a horse for a big day like this than Sir Michael Stoute and we have the added bonus of Frankie Dettori in the saddle.

Paddy Power are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

We are going to stay loyal in the Mile as well, with ZELZAL and LANCASTER BOMBER our fancies here.

It is a common theme, but the change in ground can be expected to see them improve on recent efforts back home. Don’t forget, Lancaster Bomber was second in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and he ran well in the Woodbine Mile in September.

Zelzal ran over the wrong trip and on the wrong ground at Chantilly last time out, but that effort after a break should have put him spot on for this.

Roly Poly looks a big danger.

Again, Paddy Power are offering 4 places for each way bets on this race.

Sentient Jet Juvenile

Europe’s sole runner in the Juvenile is US Navy Flag. He has a good draw if Ryan Moore can bounce him out of the gate, but he will have his hands full to beat BOLT D’ORO who has looked a potential future star in winning his 3 career starts to date.

Longines Turf

Our hopes should be higher in the Turf, where Highland Reel looks for back to back wins. However, we prefer a horse that has done us numerous favours this year, ULYSSES. He has run so many big races this season already, often on unsuitable, soft ground. This fast ground may see him land another big prize as long as a busy season doesn’t take its toll.

Lightly race by comparison, SEVENTH HEAVEN is the other one to back as she too will relish conditions. Trip and ground are perfect and she ran well at this meeting last year over an inadequate mile and a quarter trip.

Betfair are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

The meeting closes with the Classic, where Arrogate attempts to regain his superstar status.

His recent loss of form is a worry, though, and it is no surprise to see GUN RUNNER disputing favouritism as his recent form is much better.

If there is to be a shock then either Mubtaahij or WAR DECREE could provide it and we are going to roll the dice with one more O’Brien horse and suggest a speculative wager on the latter at a monster price.
