The first round of matches in the Championship produced a glut of goals, with 13 clubs each scoring at least twice and only QPR failing to find the net as they lost 1-0 at Preston in their first match under the former England manager Steve MacClaren.
Newly-promoted Wigan were 3-2 winners over Sheffield Weds, Leeds were impressive as they beat Stoke 3-1 at Elland Road and Brentford got off to a flying start as French striker Neal Maupay scored twice in a thumping 5-1 win over Rotherham at Griffin Park.
The Bees came close to forcing their way into the play-offs last season after recovering from a slow start and have proved popular in the early promotion betting. From last week’s best price of 6/1 with Bet365, they are now a 9/2* chance with Paddy Power to return to the top flight for the first time since 1947. For Leeds it hasn’t been quite such a long absence, but it’s 14 years since they were last in the Premier League, which is too long for a club of their stature. Marcelo Bielsa’s side were a best price of 12/1 with Paddy Power in the ante-post betting but are now the 10/1* third favourites with Bet365 after Stoke, West Brom and Middlesbrough all failed to win at the weekend.
