Lee Westwood rolled back the years with a stunning performance on Sunday to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa. The 45-year-old produced a brilliant eight-under-par final round of 64 to win by 3 shots from the in-form Sergio Garcia, with course specialist Louis Oosthuizen a further stroke back.
It was a 24th European Tour win of Westwood’s illustrious career, but his first in four years, and he must have been beginning to have doubts about his ability to get back into the winner’s circle.
Westwood’s wonderful trophy haul does not include a major title and he is running out of chances to put that right. His next opportunity, April’s Masters, may well be his best, as Augusta is where he has produced his best performances in the majors. He has finished outside the top 20 at Augusta only twice in the last 10 years, posting five top 10s since 2010. He has been runner-up twice and tied for third once in that time. Ladbrokes, BetVictor, Paddy Power and Betfred all quote him at 125/1* for next year’s edition.
