Kyle Edmund fought back from a set down to defeat Gael Monfils 3-6 7-6 7-6 in the final of the European Open in Antwerp on Sunday and clinch his maiden ATP Tour title.
The world no.15, and British no.1, said victory had filled him with ‘confidence and belief’ as he bids to push further up the world rankings.
The 23-year-old had reached only one previous final, losing to Pablo Andujar on the clay in Morocco earlier in the year, but it was his run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January that gave him his major career breakthrough.
Edmund will return to Melbourne in three months’ time as an 80/1* outsider with Betfred, but having beaten Kevin Anderson, Denis Istomin and Grigor Dimitrov on his way to the last four this year he knows he will be considered a serious threat.
