Champions League – Matchday 1 Tips

The Champions League Group Stages kick off this week, including Man City v Juve at the Etihad. We preview this and all televised games featuring Premier League sides.

Manchester City v Juventus

Sergio Aguero misses out with injury, but City can maintain their excellent start to the season against a team who have started their Serie A campaign with two defeats and a draw.

Juventus may have reached the final last season, but they actually lost their first two away matches at Atletico Madrid and Olympiakos – plus they have lost key players in Vidal, Tevez and Pirlo.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have won all their five Premier League games thus far, without conceding a goal, so odds of 4/5 on the home win (generally) look fair.

But, given City’s strong defensive performances this season, we feel that a better bet is on them to win to nil at best odds of 15/8 with Sky Bet.

We also suggest backing Yaya Toure to score any time during the game at stand-out odds of 31/10 with Unibet.

Finally, let’s play two correct scores in this game – City to win 1-0 and 2-0 at odds of 11/2 and 15/2 respectively with BetVictor.

Louis van Gal’s side are 5/4 favourites to win in Holland with Bet365, while PSV are available at best odds of 13/5 with Paddy Power and the draw at 5/2 (generally).

The Dutch club welcome back Memphis Depay, their top scorer last season, who scored twice in the last qualifying round against Brugges – he is worth backing to score on his return to the Philips Stadion at a stand-out 11/4 with Unibet.

United have been difficult to break down this season and will likely be defensively minded again here, so we suggest betting on a low scoring affair – Under 2.5 Goals is 17/20 with Bet365.

If you haven’t yet got a Bet365 account, their Account Opening Bonus gives you a great bankroll to start your Champions League betting with a 100% deposit bonus.

Let’s also back the 0-0 half time correct score at 15/8 with Paddy Power, as well as a 1-0 United victory at best odds of 8/1 with Unibet.

Chelsea v Maccabi Tel Aviv

Despite their terrible start to the Premier League this season, Chelsea are as short as 8/1 to win the Champions League (best price 12/1 with Bet365), with only Barca, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid ahead of them in the betting.

Part of the reason for those relatively short odds is that Chelsea have what looks an easy group of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Porto and Dynamo Kiev.

They should certainly have no trouble in seeing off Wednesday’s opponents Maccabi Tel Aviv at Stamford Bridge, and Jose Mourniho’s side are as short as 1/6 to win.

Maccabi, managed by former Chelsea player Slavisa Jokanovic, can be backed at 25/1 with Betfred, while the draw is available at 7/1 with Bet365.

The Israeli side beat Basel in the playoff round and their one star player is attacking midfielder Eran Zahavi, who scored all three of their goals in that two-leg win over the Swiss side. He looks a decent bet to score at 13/2 with Betfred.

Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are both in poor form and thus neither appeals the Goalscorer markets – Costa did not score in the Champions League last season.

We prefer a bet on Nemanja Matic, who scored twice in the group stages last season and also at the weekend against Everton. The Serbian is available at a huge looking 9/1 with Paddy Power to score at any time in the game (as short as 7/2 elsewhere).

With Chelsea looking so shaky at the back this season, conceding goals in all five of their games, we also recommend backing both teams to score at 9/5 with Coral.

On that basis, we also like 3-1 (11/1 Bet365) and 4-1 (19/1 BetVictor) Correct Scores.

Dinamo Zagreb v Arsenal

Arsenal are 3/1 second favourites with Coral to win Group F behind Bayern Munich, but the Gunners face a tough game here against the Croatian league leaders.

In fact, at odds of 13/2 with Bet365 and Betfred, we suggest taking a chance on Zagreb, who have yet to be beaten in the league after nine games.

They have won their last three games 4-0, 3-1 and 4-1, with striker Armin Hodzic scoring five – he looks a value selection to score in this game at 4/1 with Betfred.

We also suggest backing both teams to score at 19/20 with William Hill, plus the 1-1 and 2-2 Correct Scores at stand-out odds of 9/1 and 23/1 respectively with Unibet – who will refund losing Correct Score bets if a goal is scored after the 90th minute.
