Chelsea look a big price to win next weekend’s Community Shield when they face champions Manchester City at Wembley, as both teams look to get their World Cup stars back up to speed after brief summer holidays.
The two clubs were both well represented through to the latter stages of the tournament in Russia and are likely to be without several star players when they meet in the season’s traditional curtain-raiser.
The likes of David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling will be returning to training with City just a matter of days before Sunday’s match in London, with Pep Guardiola having taken a youthful squad on the club’s summer tour of the United States. For FA Cup holders Chelsea, Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard, N’golo Kante and Olivier Giroud were all involved in Russia a couple of weekends ago and both starting line-up may be significantly different to those that play on the first weekend of the Premier League season.
The bookmakers have priced the game as if it is a regular season match, with City as strong favourites, with Paddy Power and Betfred both quoting Chelsea at 11/4* in new manager Maurizio Sarri’s first game in charge.
