Cheltenham Festival 2018 – Day 3 Tips

The Ryanair and the Stayers Hurdle take centre stage on day three of the Festival.

Ryanair Chase ITV

The further rain that has fallen overnight will suit hot favourite for the Ryanair, Un Des Sceaux, although it will test his stamina more than it has arguably been tested before. If there are any chinks in the armour of last year’s winner, the living legend that is CUE CARD will be able to exploit them if re-producing his latest effort at Ascot. Based on that performance he looks the value and we could be in for a classic showdown.

If the big two disappoint for any reason then Frodon looks best placed to pick up the pieces on a track he loves.

Stayers Hurdle ITV

There could be a fairy tale ending in the Stayers Hurdle too with Sam Spinner representing some unheralded connections. He is lightly raced, unexposed and brings the best form from this season into the race. He’ll like the ground too.

However, slight preference is for YANWORTH, who was so impressive last season when winning here on heavy ground over two and a half miles. He has flirted with fences since then, but seems happiest over the smaller obstacles and Barry Geraghty has chosen him ahead of Unowhatimeanharry.

The potential fly in the ointment is BACARDYS, who is also back over hurdles after an abortive spell over jumps. He was a high class novice last season and could improve for the step up in trip.

L’Ami Serge and The Worlds End are interesting at bigger prices.

JLT Novices Chase     ITV

The card opens with the JLT, which looks set to go the way of the Irish, and it could be a showdown between Invitation Only and SHATTERED LOVE. Crucially, both will stay further than this two and a half mile trip, and slight preference is for the latter with Gordon Elliott’s team having been on fire here yesterday.

Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle     ITV

Next up is the Pertemps Final, where Elliott has another strong chance with GLENLOE. He looks to have been laid out for this and his biggest danger could be one of the other JP McManus horses, A GREAT VIEW.

Best of the home contingent could prove to be WHO DARES WINS, who was third in last year’s Coral Cup. The longer trip here may see him improve on that placing.

Paddy Power are offering 6 places for each-way bets on this race.

Brown Advisory Plate     ITV

There’s also a big field handicap over fences at 4.10pm in the shape of the Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate. The one that stands out here is the Last Goodbye, who loves the ground and really improved for the first time headgear last time out. He also ran well here last year.

The big danger could be King’s Socks who is totally unexposed and represents a yard that has a great record in this race, whilst Pougne Bobbi and Guitar Pete are interesting outsiders.
