Cheltenham Festival 2019 – Day 2 Tips

The feature race on day two of the Festival is the Queen Mother where the brilliant Altior looks for an incredible 18th consecutive victory in a race he won easily last year.  He is hard to oppose, but also hard to back at a very short price.

Queen Mother Champion Chase     ITV

For those looking for a betting interest in the race, MIN is the obvious alternative for win purposes, whilst CASTLEGRACE PADDY is the best each way value. The latter, in particular, will relish any further softening of the ground.

A tricast involving all three could also be interesting for those looking for something more exotic!

Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle     ITV

The three races that precede the big one are all made up of extremely competitive cards and we had a lengthy shortlist for each.

In the Ballymore, that opens the day’s events, we think the aptly named BREWIN’UPASTORM is the one to beat. We tipped him when he fell here on Trials Day and we hope compensation awaits this afternoon. He looked like he would have won that day if he had stood up and Olly Murphy had a novice run well in the Supreme.

Of those at bigger prices the two we like are BRIGHT FORECAST and DUNVEGAN. The former should improve for the step up in trip and his yard won the last race yesterday, whilst the latter looked a horse to follow before disappointing last time out. If it wasn’t for that effort then he’d be much shorter price today.

Seddon is another to consider in a race where plenty of bookmakers offer 4 places.

RSA Insurance Novices’ Chase     ITV

The RSA is next and TOPOFTHEGAME is a strong fancy here. Paul Nicholls’ seven year old has always looked likely to develop into a top class chaser and he has done nothing wrong in two starts over the bigger obstacles so far. He was second in last year’s Coral Cup and so has course form too.

Amongst the outsiders, NOW MCGINTY could pick up the pieces late on and snatch a place if this develops into a real stamina test.

Coral Cup     ITV

The Coral Cup is the day’s big betting heat and likely favourite, URADEL, looks to have a massive chance. He is a useful stayer on the flat and so the step up in trip should really suit him and he caught the eye on his comeback over hurdles at Leopardstown last month.

The big danger could be another Irish raider, DANCING ON MY OWN, who remains unexposed over hurdles and who has been showing some good form in decent novices’ contests.

Best of the home contingent looks to be APPLE’S SHAKIRA, who could bounce back to form over this new trip, whilst Tully East is another to consider.
