Cheltenham Festival 2019 – Day 3 Tips

The Ryanair is the first of two feature races on day three of the Cheltenham Festival and it looks like being one of the best and most competitive renewals of the race run so far in its relatively short history.

Ryanair Chase     ITV

For us, the stand out runner is the top class ROAD TO RESPECT who ran away with the Plate here two years ago before finishing fourth in last season’s Gold Cup. He has been in great from this season too and with his yard in flying form he ticks plenty of boxes. This drop in trip should suit him perfectly and a clean round of jumping should make him hard to beat.

His old rival Monalee is an obvious danger, but for those looking to back something at a bigger price CONEY ISLAND could outrun his odds. This horse is fragile but very talented and he showed signs of a return to form behind Monalee and Road To Respect last time out. The first time tongue tie is an interesting angle.

BetVictor are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

Stayers Hurdle     ITV

In the Stayers Hurdle it is hard to look beyond PAISLEY PARK, who surely only has to run up to the level of form he has shown throughout the season to take this prestigious prize. He is a thorough stayer who has already comprehensively beaten many of his rivals this campaign and his win here last time out was right out of the top drawer.

The biggest danger could be a horse he beat that day BLACK OP. This horse was second at last year’s Festival to Samcro and he has been switched back to hurdles after some sloppy jumping in a couple of novice chases.  He probably still has more to offer over the smaller obstacles.

The other one to back is the ultra-consistent TOP NOTCH. He has some top class form over fences, but ran well over hurdles behind Paisley Park at Ascot earlier in the season and has some excellent past Festival form.

Ladbrokes are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

JLT Novices Chase     ITV

The day opens with the JLT, which looks likely to go the way of the Irish. It also looks likely to go the way of Willie Mullins as he has three very strong claims, the best of which could prove to be REAL STEEL. He has won his last two starts easily and looks on the upgrade.

The main danger could be MENGLI KHAN, who could be suited by the step up in trip.  He was good enough to finish fourth in last season’s Supreme and he handles soft ground well.

Another Mullins runner, Voix Du Reve, is respected, whilst the pick of the home contingent could be Kildisart.

Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle     ITV

The first of the day’s big handicaps is the Pertemps, where SIRE DU BERLAIS makes plenty of appeal. This horse was a staying on fourth in last season’s Martin Pipe and he looks to have been laid out for this ever since by his top connections. He was an eye catching, fast finisher when last seen out at Leopardstown and has first time cheekpieces on to try to squeeze out further improvement.

That Leopardstown race could prove key as we also like WALK TO FREEDOM and Thermistocles, with slight preference for the former, despite his big weight (horses towards the top of the handicap have a good record in the contest).

Pick of the home contingent could be FLEMCARA, who may make it a day to remember for Emma Lavelle. All this horse does is stay, so he did well to finish a staying on 11th in last year’s Coral Cup off a higher mark.

Boyhood, Black Mischief (if the ground dries out) and Notwhatiam are others to consider.

Paddy Power and Coral are both offering 6 places for each-way bets on this race.
