Cheltenham International – Saturday Tips

The Caspian Gold Cup is the big betting heat at Cheltenham today and it is also the first race live on ITV.

Caspian Caviar Gold Cup Handicap Chase

We are not usually fans of backing favourites in races like this, but CLAN DES OBEAUX has looked a top class prospect in the making on recent starts and it interesting that Paul Nicholls still thinks he is well enough handicapped to run here despite top weight. He goes on soft ground and Nicholls has always held him in high regard. This could be a stepping stone to even bigger things.

The main danger could be KINGS ODYSSEY, who fell in this last year when still travelling well off of a 7lbs higher mark. His form has been a bit iffy since then, but he ran nicely on his comeback and his yard is in good form. If his jumping holds up he should hit the frame at least – Betfair are offering the best odds and 4 places.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

The Bristol Hurdle is next and it is hard to find an angle given the small field.

Fergal O’Brien runs two and if the race turns into a really stamina test don’t rule out the outsider of his pair, AYE AYE CHARLIE, who could easily show massive improvement now upped in trip.

Unibet International Hurdle

The International Hurdle follows and it will be interesting to see how Melon handles the step up in class. Neither he nor The New One represent much value, so throw a few quid at CHTIBELLO instead. He was progressive last year and seems to be at his best with some give underfoot.

OLBG Mares’ Handicap Hurdle

The last race at Cheltenham is a competitive mares’ handicap and we think Dan Skelton can get the double up here courtesy of MOMELLA who ran so well in a Grade 2 novices’ contest at this track a month ago.

The main danger could be the fast improving GRACEFUL LEGEND. The further she went the better she looked at Ascot recently and Betfair are offering 4 places.

bet365 Handicap Chase

There are also a couple of races on TV from Doncaster, where the pick of the contests is he bet365 Handicap Chase.

SEGO SUCCESS won this two years ago and he can repeat the dose here off of a 3lbs lower mark. His seasonal re-appearance at Warwick recently will have put him spot on for this.

Of those at bigger prices, SOLSTICE SON is interesting for the in form Anthony Honeyball. If you can forgive him his poor run at Cheltenham recently, where he may have gone off too fast under an amateur rider, he looks overpriced.

The other horse to back at Doncaster is MOHAAYED who goes in a race before the ITV cameras are turned on. He has is ground here and has been threatening to win a nice prize for a while.
