Gennady Golovkin is the 4/7 favourite with Betfred and BetVictor to win his rematch with Saul Alvarez, which has been confirmed for the early hours of Sunday May 6th, replacing the postponed rematch between David Haye and Tony Bellew on the schedule.
The two men fought to a controversial draw in Las Vegas in September, with most expert viewers calling the bout in favour of Golovkin, but with one of the judges making ‘Canelo’ Alvarez the clear winner. Lennox Lewis labelled the outcome ‘ridiculous’, although Golovkin’s response has been more sanguine. “I didn’t agree with some of the judges’ decisions,” said the Kazakh fighter known as ‘Triple-G’. “This time there will be no doubt – I am leaving the ring as the middleweight champion of the world.” Golovkin certainly landed the better shots in the first fight and he should be around 13/8 to win by knockout when the bookmakers price up that particular market. Alvarez, who has lost only one of his 52 professional fights, is a 6/4 chance to take Golovkin’s WBA, WBC and IBF belts.
