Anthony Joshua has moved closer to a heavyweight unification match against WBO champion Joseph Parker in the spring after the two camps agreed a deal on how to split the proceeds. Joshua, the WBO, WBA and IBF title holder, announced during the BBC’s Sports Personality awards show that Parker was looking his most likely opponent for the spring and Parker’s promoter David Higgins has since confirmed that talks have taken a ‘giant leap forward’.
Joshua hopes the fight will be a stepping stone to a further unification bout against WBC champion Deontay Wilder later in 2018 as he seeks to become the first boxer to hold all five heavyweight belts at the same time. The bookmakers believe the first part of the equation will be routine, with Coral offering best odds of just 1/16 for the Londoner to take Parker’s title. Meanwhile, he’s currently a 2/5 chance with Ladbrokes, Coral, Betfred and BetVictor to win a potential fight against Wilder.
