Ireland looked likely to miss out on World Cup qualification after their 1-0 defeat to Serbia in Dublin in September, but a 1-0 victory over Wales in Cardiff secured them their chance to make it to Russia via the play-offs.

Irish fans will remember the last time they were in this position, almost exactly eight years ago, when they missed out on going to the World Cup in South Africa – after losing their play-off with France 2-1 on aggregate in controversial circumstances.

Then they lost the home leg 1-0, but won 1-0 in Paris before going out in extra-time to a goal that should have been disallowed due to a blatant Thierry Henry handball.

It’s certainly worth noting the 1-0 scorelines in all of those crucial fixtures – and with so much at stake it’s no surprise that two of the three World Cup qualifier first legs this week have also finished 1-0.

Additionally, there were four 1-0 scorelines for Ireland in their qualifying group (W3, L1), while Denmark were involved in three 1-0 scorelines in their group (W2, L1) and you can back both 1-0’s here at best odds of 4/1 & 11/1 respectively at William Hill.

Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen scored first in Denmark’s last 2 qualifiers and 8 times in total during their qualifying campaign – he’s 13/2 with William Hill to score first.

For the Republic, West Brom’s James McClean scored four of their eight goals on the road in qualifying, including the only goal in their 1-0 wins in both Austria and Wales.

He is a stand-out 9/1 at Unibet to score in Copenhagen (as short as 7/2 elsewhere).
