Ebor Festival 2018 – Day 2 Tips

Day two of the Ebor meeting starts with a pair of juvenile contests, the first being the Lowther for fillies over six furlongs.

Lowther Stakes

Of the fancied runners, we think ANGEL’S HIDEAWAY is the one to beat with the Aiden O’Brien yard still not having hit top form after it was affected by a bug over the summer.

The risk with Angel’s Hideaway is that she has her quirks and it might be best to back her to cover your stakes on a couple of each way options.

There are three in the field at bigger prices who look potential improvers over this trip – Little Kim, Flawless Jewel and Queen Jo Jo.

LITTLE KIM has shown her class already, including in a Group 3 at Deauville, and, hopefully, the ground won’t be too quick for her here.

Given her longer odds, QUEEN JO JO is the other one to get the nod. She is highly regarded by her yard and travelled like a good horse when winning at Beverley last time out.

Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes

The valuable Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes is next and it is a contest the Hannons have done well in down the years. Indeed, we think MASARU can give the yard their third consecutive win in the race as he was mightily impressive when winning his only start to date at Windsor in June. It looks like he has been laid out for this ever since. He also has a high draw, which was definitely a plus yesterday.

Of those drawn on the other side, SECRET VENTURE makes plenty of appeal. Like Masaru, he is one from one so far in his fledgling career and he should relish the step up to six furlongs. He has some fancy entries later in the season and so must be showing a good deal at home.

The other three on our shortlist were Oberyn Martell, Gallovie and Concierge, and slight preference is for CONCIERGE who returns to this distance after two impressive wins over the minimum trip. He’ll need some luck in running, but should pick up plenty of these in the closing stages if the gaps do come in time.

Clipper Logistics Handicap

The day’s big betting heat is the Clipper Logistics Handicap and it looks even more wide open now the overnight favourite, Seniority, has been scratched.

The one we like is the top weight, SHARJA BRIDGE, who surely has a big handicap in him for Roger Varian. The mile and a quarter in the Wolferton may have been too much for him last time out, and this drop in trip and class should be ideal.

The other two to back are the Saeed bin Suroor pair of SILVER LINE and REACH HIGH.

Silver Line didn’t stay over further at Goodwood last time out, but had taken the step up to a mile well when third at Sandown before that. He’s worth another chance.

Reach High is one of the least exposed horses in the field and he ran well when second on his return from Dubai last time out. That should have put him spot on for this and the yard is in good form. The only negative is a high draw.

Others to consider are Original Choice, Kynren and Firmament.

Darley Yorkshire Oaks

ITV’s coverage ends with the day’s feature contest, the Yorkshire Oaks and we think this can go the way of another Karl Burke runner, LAURENS.

This filly has always looked capable of stepping up to a mile and a half, and the overnight rain that has taken the sting out of the ground will have further improved her chances. She is lightly raced enough to still be improving and has avoided some of the hard races her rivals have been competing in over the summer. She is also very tough and unlikely to be out battled in a finish.

If eight go to post then HORSEPLAY looks the pick of the outsiders as she too is on an upward curve. She doesn’t have much to find with Coronet on the formbook.
