Ebor Festival 2018 – Day 3 Tips

Day three of York’s Ebor meeting looks arguably the best with two superstars set to showcase their very different talents.

Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup Stakes

At 2.25pm Stradivarius goes in search of a £1 million bonus as he looks to cement himself as the king of the stayers in the Lonsdale Cup. He is rightly a long odds on favourite, but there is some each way value with nine runners going to post and RED VERDON, in particular, looks a great option as he must surely make the frame at least.

Ed Dunlop’s charge has been a model of consistency in Group contests recently and has shown he stays this trip in the past.

Also take a chance on SIR CHAUVELIN at a massive price. He is in the form of his life and Thundering Blue showed earlier in the week that a horse on a roll can often take a big step up in class in his stride. He can’t win, but he may sneak a place.

Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes

In the day’s feature race, the Nunthorpe, one of the fastest horses on the planet, Battash, looks all set to take another Group 1. Again, he is odds on and should win as long as connections can keep his sometimes fiery temperament under control.

He won the King George at Goodwood last time out, where we fancied HAVANNA GREY to give him more of a race than he did. There may have been excuses for our selection that day so we are going to give Karl Burke’s three year old another chance here on the basis that we don’t like tipping odds on favourites.

The other one to back at the prices is MABBS CROSS. This trip may be on the short side for her, but a strong gallop would bring her into the equation and she looks the type of filly to improve as the season progresses.

Sky Bet Handicap

The action starts with a competitive handicap over a mile and a half and we think CALIBURN is the stand out option here. He looks ready for the step back up in trip and is less exposed than most of his rivals.

TITUS also makes plenty of appeal, for very similar reasons. He has run well here in the past and seems to enjoy these big field handicaps.

Finally, we can’t ignore RESHOUN who represents a trainer we love to follow – Ian Williams. He’s been out of form on his last couple of starts, but is coming down the handicap as a result and Williams’ record in this sort of race always demands respect.

Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack Stakes

The Gimcrack is the day’s other televised race and the pair to concentrate on here are EMARAATY ANA and SPACE TRAVELLER. The former was doing all of his best work in the closing stages at Newbury last time out when finishing just behind Chuck Willis. He can improve past that rival here.

Space Traveller is two from two and has huge potential. He should improve again for the step up to 6f and his yard won this race last season.
