Ebor Festival 2018 – Day 4 Tips

There is live ITV coverage of four races on the final day of the festival at York, including the Ebor at 3.40, plus additional races from Goodwood.

Ebor Handicap

The ante post market for this afternoon’s Ebor has been dominated by Stratum, who hacked up in a competitive handicap at Newbury five weeks ago and, given his connections, he could easily cope with the weights rise here and put this race to bed in similar fashion. However, his current price isn’t appealing as this is a better race over a two furlong shorter trip and we are going to instead suggest a few at more appealing odds.

Drawn close to Stratum is BLAKENEY POINT and this has been the target for Roger Charlton’s five year old all season. He has had a few prep runs over shorter trips and, with the first time blinkers on today, looks set to hit peak form at the right time.

Surprisingly, low draws haven’t always been an advantage in this race, so our other two selections are drawn high.

First up is Irish raider MUSTAJEER. He is lightly raced enough to still be improving and could also relish this step up in trip.

The other one to back is Stratum’s stablemate, WHISKEY SOUR. He won two races on the level at the Galway Festival in 2017 and still has more to offer on the flat. He has also improved over hurdles since then.

Strensall Stakes

The day’s action at York kicks off with the Group 3 Strensell Stakes, which should go the way of our old favourite, LORD GLITTERS. He has been keeping good company all season and deserves a Group win. This slightly longer trip should help him and he looks hard to oppose.

There is a nice each way look about the race and with that in mind it is also worth backing CHILEAN. This is a drop in grade after his run in the St James’s Palace Stakes and, although most of his big runs to date have been on soft ground, there is nothing to say he can’t operate on better ground.

Melrose Handicap

The Melrose at 2.25pm is run over the same course and distance as the Ebor.

Of the fancied runners, MEKONG has to be respected given that Sir Michael Stoute does so well with this sort of horse. He looks to have more to offer over this trip.

The same is true of the unexposed, HEART OF GRACE, who is trying it for the first time, whilst CANDIDATE could surprise a few, including stablemate Corgi.

Polish is another one to consider.

City Of York Stakes

There’s another Group race at 3.00pm in the shape of the City Of York Stakes.

Again, the favourite looks hard to oppose and EXPERT EYE might be worth including in a treble with Lord Glitters and Beat The Bank (see below). Stoute seems to have got this horse’s career back on track and he will be better over this seven furlongs having been headed close home in the Sussex Stakes last time out.

The shape of the race is very similar to the opener, so we’ll also back an outsider here and the one we like is ARBALET. He wasn’t far behind Expert Eye in the Jersey at Royal Ascot despite hitting trouble in running and can give the favourite most to do here.

Ladbrokes Celebration Mile Stakes

The Celebration Mile is the big race at Goodwood. It should go the way of BEAT THE BANK as he’s run well here before, including in the Sussex Stakes last time, and this looks a drop in grade. It is interesting to see Oisin Murphy on the downs rather than up at York.

Ladbrokes Bet 5 Get 20 Handicap

There is also a big field handicap for punters to get stuck into over seven furlongs at 3.15pm and here we like DANIELSFLYER, CHESSMAN and TRUTH OR DARE.

Danielsflyer keep getting caught close home in similar races so this fast seven furlongs should really suit him, Chessman was a real eye catcher when finish fast at Ascot last time out and Truth Or Dare is a course specialist who looks to be running into form.

Flaming Spear is a massive danger as he definitely has a big race in him, but the ground may still be too fast for him.
