England versus Wales contests – whether rugby or football – are always intense occasions, and Thursday’s Euro 2016 encounter in Lens is sure to be yet another.

England played well despite not winning their opening game against Russia, while Wales will come into this match full of confidence having beaten Slovakia.

But Roy Hodgson’s side are firm favourites with the bookies at best price 3/5 with Stan James, while Wales are as big as 6/1 (Bet365) and the draw 16/5 (Ladbrokes).

The psychology of this game is interesting. With a win under their belts, Wales would be happy with a draw here, and Chris Coleman could therefore pack his midfield, asking his side to look for counter attacking and set piece opportunities.

With that defensive mentality, chances could be few and far between for both teams, and we feel the best bet may be on Under 2.5 Goals at 4/5 with Bet365.

That bet would have won in each of the last five (and 7 of the last 8) England v Wales games, plus if you place a pre-match bet up to £50 on this Group B game with Bet365, they will give you a RISK FREE IN-PLAY BET to the same stake.

On the same basis, we strongly suggest backing the first goal being scored after 29 minutes at Evens with Paddy Power, as for us that price should be nearer 4/6.

Given that opportunities for an open play goal may be sparse, we will be backing dead-ball specialist Gareth Bale to score the first goal at 13/2 with Paddy Power and also Eric Dier at 33/1. That price on Dier seems crazy given he scored from a free kick in England’s opening game (he is 14/1 elsewhere). Back both each-way.

We correctly predicted a 1-1 Correct Score in both England and the Republic of Ireland’s opening games and we’ll go for that again at odds of 7/1 with Bet365 – who refund losing Correct Score bets on all games that end 0-0.

Finally, while Wales look too big a price at 6/1 to win, we suggest backing them on the Asian Handicap getting a goal start at 37/40 with Bet365. This way you would collect if the Welsh win or draw and get your money back if they lose by one goal.

Remember, England have failed to score more than once in 13 of their last 14 matches at major tournaments (European Championship and World Cup Finals).
