Epsom Derby 2018 Tips

All sports need a superstar, so it would be a major boost for flat racing were the much hyped Saxon Warrior to win the Derby this afternoon and claim the second leg of the Triple Crown in the process.

Investec Derby

He certainly looked a monster when winning the Guineas at Newmarket last month, but he isn’t much of a betting prospect at odds of around even money, especially with the drying ground still a shade softer than ideal and with a bad draw in stall one to overcome.

Instead, we think his stablemate, DELANO ROOSEVELT is a massive each way player. He has been steadily progressive in his career to date, but should really relish the step up to a mile and a half here after just being denied by Hazapour in the Derrinstown last time out. Another Aiden O’Brien runner, The Pentagon, was third that day in what could prove to be the pick of the trials.

With the favourite being such a short price, and with 12 runners set to go to post, there is a nice each way shape to the race and it easy to make a case for a number of the runners at big prices.

After he won the Lingfield Derby Trial for us last time out, we can’t desert KNIGHT TO BEHOLD for whom any further drying of the ground would be a major bonus.

DEE EX BEE could also out run his odds and is narrowly preferred to Sevenna Star as the other selection. He has course winning form to his name and was a shade unlucky behind Young Rascal in the Chester Vase and yet is 4 times his price here.

Investec Private Banking Handicap

Decent betting opportunities in the other four races that are live on ITV this afternoon are harder to come by.

In the Investec Private Banking Handicap at 2.00pm, SHIP OF THE FEN looks the most solid option. He won nicely on his re-appearance and looks like a colt on the up. The ground should be ideal for him here.

Princess Elizabeth Stakes

A Group 3 for fillies and mares follows, and with stablemate Windstoss running such a good race in the Coronation Cup here yesterday it may pay to support the German raider, DIAPHORA who has a bit to find on the book, but who is lightly raced enough to still be improving. Again, underfoot conditions should suit.

Investec Diomed Stakes

Likely favourite, Arod, is now out of the Diomed Stakes, which means only seven go to post and only two places.

That has slightly ruined the contest from a betting perspective, but for those keen to have an interest we’d suggest taking a chance on TRUE VALOUR who ran well at the meeting last year.

Investec Corporate Banking ‘Dash’ Handicap

The Dash that precedes the big one is of much more interest to punters although with twenty going to post the winner is likely to need plenty of luck in running. The draw will also play a part so we have gone for two horses drawn on opposite sides.

Our main fancy is BLUE DE VEGA, who is drawn high. He looks to be running into form for Robert Cowell and will surely be winning a big handicap soon.

The other one to back is EDWARD LEWIS who also looks to have been primed for this and who ran well here last year despite a troubled passage. The fact that he is proven on this unique track is an obvious plus.

Betfair and Paddy Power are both offering 5 places for each-way bets on this race.
