Epsom Oaks 2018 Tips

Epsom’s two day Derby meeting kicks off this afternoon and the feature race, as always, is The Oaks.

Investec Oaks

The soft ground has contributed to a smaller than usual field with only nine fillies lining up and Aiden O’Brien is responsible for five of them, suggesting the maestro from Coolmore isn’t necessarily sure who his number one is.

Our pick of the quintet is the maiden, FOREVER TOGETHER, who met trouble in running behind stablemate Magic Wand in the Chester Oaks. She looks the type to improve more than her rivals as she gains experience and if this particular test doesn’t come too soon for her then she looks the one to beat.

Another of Forever Together’s stablemates, Flattering, is an interesting outsider, but the other one to back is the unbeaten filly, PERFECT CLARITY. She looks like a guaranteed stayer and her yard has been bullish about her chances in recent weeks. She stayed on very strongly to stretch clear of her rivals in the Oaks Trial at Lingfield on her last start.

Investec Woodcote EBF Stakes

The card opens with the Woodcote, a speed test over 6 furlongs for two year olds who will have to cope with coming down the famous Epsom hill and running around Tattenham Corner.

The one we like most here is TRUE BELIEF for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin.

He was well supported on debut, but missed the break and was hampered, so did well to finish fourth. He should have come on plenty for the experience and is well drawn in berth 3.

Investec Click & Invest Mile Handicap

The day’s first handicap is the Investec Mile, where course winner KING’S PAVILION makes plenty of appeal. He has won on soft ground before too and has been running into form at the right time for trainer Jason Ward.

Investec Coronation Cup

The second Group 1 on the card is the Coronation Cup, which looks close to being a penalty kick for Cracksman.

With Hawksbill proven on soft ground as well, he should be the one for the forecast, but for those wanting to take the market leaders on with one at a big prize we’d suggest an each way investment on YUCATAN.

His career has been stalled by injury in recent times, but he is nicely bred and couldn’t be in better hands. He’ll surely win a decent prize or too for Aiden O’Brien before the season is out and could sneak a place here at least as the step up in trip looks a plus.

Investec Wealth & Investment Handicap

In the other race on ITV, the Investec Wealth and Investment Handicap, the two we like are last year’s winner NOT SO SLEEPY and NATIVE FIGHTER. The latter represents a yard that loves to lay a horse out for this meeting and the drop in trip today could be the angle.
