Venue

The PGA Tour remains in California this week for the Farmers Insurance Open, which is played over both the North and South Courses at the Torrey Pines club in La Jolla. Both courses are par 72 but they differ sharply in length, the South Course measuring a whopping 7,698 yards, almost 650 yards more than the North. With three rounds played over the South Course, distance off the tee is key. This event, formerly known as the Buick Invitational, has been dominated by seven-time champion Tiger Woods, but was won last year by Jon Rahm. Brandt Snedeker earned his second victory here in 2016, succeeding Jason Day as champion. Bubba Watson is another former winner of this event, while Phil Mickelson has won it three times, but not since 2001.

Favourites

A year on from his first PGA Tour win at this event, Rahm has risen to second in the world rankings on the back of his victory at the CareerBuilder Challenge on Sunday, where he beat Andrew Landry in a play-off. The Spaniard leads a strong field here at best odds of 8/1 with Bet365, with Rickie Fowler the 12/1 second favourite with the majority of firms. Justin Rose was unable to keep his magnificent run going in Abu Dhabi, although he wasn’t completely off the pace and he’s a 16/1 chance this week with Bet365. William Hill go the same price about Hideki Matsuyama, while Stan James are offering 25/1 about the 2015 winner Jason Day. Woods is at 28/1 with Betfred as he makes the second appearance of his latest comeback from injury.

Tips

Only one player has been driving the ball further than TONY FINAU in the early stages of the season and the world number 44 has the power to take the edge off the South Course, as he showed when he finished fourth here last year. He was 24th and 18th on his two previous visits, while his recent form is strong – he hasn’t missed a cut since the Players Championship in May. Bet365 are offering stand-out odds of 35/1 on our first selection.

BRIAN HARMAN‘s form dipped a little with his share of 20th last week, which followed on from a run of five successive top 10s, including four top five finishes. Those results have taken him to a career-high ranking of 20th, although he’d certainly like to crown this purple patch with a victory to add to his success as last year’s Wells Fargo Championship. A top 10 here last year offers further encouragement – and he’s 33/1 at Coral.

As one of the biggest hitters around, GARY WOODLAND should appreciate the layout of the South Course and he has three top 20 finishes in the last four editions here. He’s missed only one cut in his last 18 starts and was seventh on his last outing at the Sony Open. The 33-year-old has been in and around the world’s top 50 for six years and this event represents a big opportunity for him. He’s at 50/1 with both Betfred & Unibet.
