Tommy Fleetwood sent his rivals a timely reminder of why he is currently the European Tour’s number one golfer, storming through the back nine of his final round to mount a successful defence of his title at the HSBC Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.
Fleetwood birdied six of his last nine holes on his way to carding a closing 65, overhauling Ross Fisher and Rory McIlroy at the top of the leaderboard to win by two shots and land pre-tournament odds of 22/1 with Bet365. It was another major blow for Fisher, who was beaten into second place in successive weeks by Tyrrell Hatton in October, while for McIlroy it was an encouraging return to action after a three-month recuperation from a series of injury problems. Fleetwood’s price for April’s Masters has shortened pretty much across the board on the back of his latest victory, with Stan James offering best odds of 50/1. McIlroy, meanwhile, remains the 9/1 third favourite with most firms.
