Friday Horse Racing Tips

It is Chester Cup day and the big race is live on ITV4 at 3.35pm this afternoon.

Chester Cup Handicap

As with every race at Chester, the draw is likely to play a big part in the outcome. To emphasise the fact, no less than eight of the last ten winners of this valuable prize have been drawn 11 or lower, and of the 40 horses to finish in the first four in the last ten renewals 27 had a single digit berth in the stalls.

Amongst the market leaders, the quartet that catch our eye are Time To Study, Stargazer, Dubawi Fifty and Grandee.

DUBAWI FIFTY has the widest draw of the four, but looks the most solid as he is ultra-consistent and appears to still be on the upgrade. He was just behind Stargazer at Newcastle last time out, but has a slight swing in the weights here and may be better suited by the longer trip.

GRANDEE is the other one to get the nod as he is having only his second start for David O’Meara and could be a bit of a dark horse. He had some decent form in Ireland and showed plenty on his debut for his new yard at Ripon recently. If he can see out the trip everything else looks ideal for him.

In terms of those at bigger prices, the one that appeals most is PRINCE OF ARRAN, who takes a significant drop in class here. He ran in the Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup last season, and was beaten less than 6 lengths in the Dubai Gold Cup last time out. He is a bit quirky, so the twists and turns of this unique track could be just what he needs.

Paddy Power are offering 5 places for each-way bets on this race (just 4 elsewhere).

Earl Grosvenor Handicap

There are two other fiercely competitive handicaps on terrestrial TV. The first is over 7f at 1.50pm, where a number of the runners haven’t been in the best of form recently.

One of the exceptions is ABOVE THE REST, whose name hopefully reflects his standing here. He won the Bunbury Cup last season and has a course win on his CV too. He has a good draw and looks a very solid each-way option – especially with Unibet offering 4 places.

He’s in berth three and inside him is BARAWEEZ, with the plum inside draw. This horse hasn’t won since 2015, but has been knocking on the door recently and is well handicapped based on the best of his old form.

Boodles Diamond Handicap

The other race for punters to get stuck into is the Boodles Diamond Handicap at 3.00pm.

Franny Norton rides this track as well as anyone and if he can get TITI MAKFI to the front early Mark Johnston’s filly could be hard to peg back. She was second in a listed event at Goodwood last weekend and should be suited by the drop to a mile and a quarter here.

Restorer looks the big danger on his debut for Ian Williams.

Paddy Power are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race (just 3 elsewhere).
