Venue

The Frys.com Open moved to California and the Silverado Country Club last year, with the event won for the first time in its new home by Sang-moon Bae. The 7,203-yard North Course rewards precision from the tee – wayward shots will fall foul of the sloping, tree-lined fairways and limit access to the well-guarded greens.

Favourites

The big names usually take time to ease into the new PGA Tour season, but perhaps as a result of his injury problems over the summer Rory McIlroy has opted to make his first appearance of the 2015/16 schedule in California and is the clear favourite, at odds of 5/1 (general). Justin Rose, Brooks Koepka and Hideki Matsuyama are the other players in the world’s top 15 to tee it up this week. Rose is a 10/1 chance with  Betfred and Coral, Matsuyama is 18/1 and Koepka is a 20/1 chance with Ladbrokes.

Tips

Several players made strong challenges at this season-opener 12 months ago and went on to enjoy impressive years on the PGA Tour and we will be following the progress of a couple of them this week.

Steven BowditchThe 2014-15 season was easily the best of STEVEN BOWDITCH‘s career to date and it began with a near miss here. The Australian mounted a strong Sunday challenge to Bae, but fell just short. However, he went on to finish in the top 20 in the FedEx Cup rankings and will be looking for another strong start to the year this week. He’s 50/1 in places, but Stan James and Coral are both offering 80s – a price which is sure to be snapped up quickly.

Tony FinauFor TONY FINAU, last year was his first on the PGA Tour and he finished it in a creditable 43rd place. The season began with a share of second place here and featured 16 top 25s from 31 outings. His form dipped in the spring, but he missed the cut at just two of his last 14 tournaments, which included a top 10 at the US PGA and a top 20 at the US Open. He is available at 40/1 (generally), but Paddy Power offer 6 places for each-way bets.

scott-brownSCOTT BROWN‘s year followed a similar pattern to that of Finau – he made a solid start with a share of 12th place at this event, faded in the spring, but came on strong through the summer with a run of consistent good results. He also finished third in this tournament in 2013, before the switch to Silverado. He’s an outsider for sure, but worthy of a small each-way interest at the stand-out odds of 150/1 on offer with Coral.
