Glorious Goodwood 2018 – Day 1 Tips

Glorious Goodwood gets underway this afternoon and there’s a competitive handicap over a mile and a quarter to ease punters into five days of top class flat race action, the best of which is being shown on ITV.

Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap

Mark Johnston has farmed the race in recent seasons and the in form Rainbow Rebel could maintain his amazing record in the race. However, he is shooting up the handicap as a result of his recent successes and there may be better treated horses elsewhere.

One of those could be SILVER LINE for the red hot Said bin Suroor. This horse is totally unexposed at the trip, but it looked to be within his compass given the way he flew up the Sandown hill over a mile last time out.

There are dangers everywhere and whilst we like Appeared, based on his fourth at Royal Ascot two starts ago, he has a high draw to overcome, so instead take a chance on the rank outsider, BRITTANIC. He has been running better than his form figures might suggest and his hold up style could see him pick up a place at least late on if the leaders go off too fast. Back him with Ladbrokes who offer 4 places.

Qatar Vintage Stakes

Three Group races follow, the first of which is the Vintage Stakes for two year olds.

There have been some top class winners of this race down the years and this looks a strong renewal where a case can be made for most of the runners.

Again, it is a race Mark Johnston likes to target with one of his strongest juveniles and DARK VISION has looked ready for this step up in class and trip following two impressive wins over 6f so far in his fledgling career.

He looks to have DUNKERON to beat, who is arguably the form pick. Alan King has been doing really well with his runners on the level this summer and this horse improved massively when fourth in the July Stakes last time out. He too is ready for the extra furlong here.

Qatar Lennox Stakes

The Lennox Stakes is also run over 7 furlongs and one of the best bets of the day looks to be our old favourite, SIR DANCEALOT, who is back at his optimum trip. He nearly nicked a place for us at a massive price in the July Cup last time out and a repeat of that level of form here should be enough for him to take the valuable prize.

The main opposition should come from the David O’Meara pair of Suedois and SO BELOVED. They were third and fifth respectively in this race last year and have been running into form recently. The latter is much better value in the market and can reverse form if enjoying a less troubled passage than he did last season.

Qatar Goodwood Cup Stakes

The meeting’s first Group 1 is the Goodwood Cup and it revolves around Stradivarius, who won the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot for us last time out. He is rightly odds on here, but the race has the feel of a contest where a shock could happen so we’d suggest backing both outsiders, who look overpriced.

DAL HARRAILD has first time head gear on to help him bridge the form gap, whilst ST MICHEL represents the most in form stable in the country currently. His trainer, Sir Mark Prescott, also excels with his stayers and this horse should come on for his first run of the season, which was also his first run after a gelding operation.
