Glorious Goodwood 2018 – Day 2 Tips

Day two of Goodwood’s festival meeting includes the feature Sussex Stakes, plus we also preview the Galway Plate over in Ireland this evening.

Matchbook Betting Podcast Goodwood Handicap

Today’s opener sees the return to the level of Lil Rockerfeller, who must be just about the best handicapped horse in training. If this race was a hurdle, he’d be 26lbs worse of with a horse like Coeur De Lion, for example, so the race clearly revolves around Neil King’s popular chestnut.

A certainty on paper isn’t always a certainty on the track, however, so given the prices we are minded to take the favourite on with KLOUD GATE and IMPHAL.

Kloud Gate was a staying on second for us last time out in a better race than this at Newbury. This longer trip and softer ground will play to his strengths and, with Ryan Moore booked to ride, there is plenty to like about his chances as long as that Newbury race didn’t leave a mark.

Marcus Tregoning loves to run his best horses here and Imphal is another who looks likely to be suited by the marathon trip having been seen staying on late in recent races over shorter distances.

Move Over To Matchbook Handicap

Next up is a handicap over a mile and a half and for us the four to concentrate on are Making Miracles, Infrastructure, Polish and Miss Latin.

POLISH looks well treated on his first run in a handicap and narrowly gets the our vote along with INFRASTRUCTURE, who looked a horse to follow when winning at Sandown last time out. He looks to have a big chance based on recent form lines with likely favourite Corgi.

Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes

The two year olds are up next in the Molecomb, and the market seems to have got the race right with the contest looking to revolve around Soldier’s Call and RUMBLE INTHEJUNGLE. It is hard to dessert the former after he won so well for us at Royal Ascot, but Rumble Inthejungle may have the greater improvement in him and may also be better suited by this easier track.

Qatar Sussex Stakes

The day’s big race is the Sussex Stakes, where two Royal Ascot winners go hoof to hoof. Without Parole is looking to make it five out of five for John Gosden, but we think EXPERT EYE will be better suited by the track and can give Sir Michael Stoute another big race win.

This horse lost his way after a hugely impressive win here last season, but Stoute seems to have found the key to him again and he scythed through the field last time out to win going away.

Galway Plate

For jumping fans there is the Galway Plate to look forward to later on this evening and, as you’d expect, the race is dominated by owners Gigginstown Stud and JP McManus, and trainers Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins.

Pick of the McManus runners looks to be last year’s third SLOWMOTION, who has been targeted at this race for a while. She had an ideal preparation in a hurdle recently and has first time blinkers on to help eek out some further improvement.

Another McManus runner, KITTEN ROCK, also ran over hurdles last time out and is lightly raced enough over fences to be open to further improvement. He was thought talented enough to contest the 2016 Champion Hurdle, where he finished a respectable sixth.

Of the outsiders, Gigginstown’s VALSEUR LIDO is dangerously well handicapped and has the excellent Rachael Blackmore on board. He seemed to have his enthusiasm rekindled by a spin over the Grand National fences last time out.

Others on the shortlist included Jury Duty and Saturnas.
