Glorious Goodwood 2018 – Day 3 Tips

The fillies take centre stage at Goodwood today, where the feature race is the Nassau Stakes.

Qatar Nassau Stakes

Only six go to post fand we think 1,000 Guineas winner, BILLESDON BROOK, can get back to winning ways in this Group 1 contest. She was a surprise winner of the Newmarket Classic, but ran well at Royal Ascot and looks likely to be well suited by this step up to a mile and a quarter.

The lightly raced Veracious looks the main danger, as she could be a typical late maturer for Sir Michael Stoute

Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes

There’s also a Group race for fillies at 2.25pm, this time over 1m 6f.

Given the ultra impressive nature of her win last time out, it is hard to look beyond the likely favourite, PILASTER, who could still be anything for Roger Varian. This is a step up in class, but she is two from two so far this season and her breeding suggests still improve again for this longer trip.

The same is true for LUBINKA, who looks the pick of the outsiders. She has run in some top class races already in her fledgling career, but has often looked a bit one paced in the closing stages, so she could out run her price here with the emphasis being more on stamina.

Matchbook Best Value Exchange Handicap

The day kicks off with a competitive handicap over a mile and a quarter, where AL JELLABY looks the one to beat. He has just come up short in his two races over a mile so far this season, so the extra two furlongs might be what is needed to see him get his head back in front.

The other one we like is the very lightly raced NEW SHOW, for a trainer / jockey combination that always warrants plenty of respect. He is well bred and looks a likely improver now upped in trip.

Sing Out Loud and Bathsheba Bay are others to consider.

Qatar Richmond Stakes

The other televised race is the Richmond Stakes for two year olds.

There is no standout performer in the line up, with five of the nine runners priced up at between 5/1 and 6/1 by some bookies this morning.

Given his previous history in the race, we are going to plump for NEVERLAND ROCK for Richard Hannon as it is interesting to see this colt being dropped back in trip to six furlongs. Frankie Dettori is on board after his ban, which is another plus.

Also take a chance on rank outsider COOL REFLECTION. He is progressing slowly but surely, and Paul Cole has had a number of juveniles run well at monster prices in races like this down the years.

Guinness Galway Hurdle Handicap

The Galway Hurdle is the feature race for jumps fans today and the two that stand out for us are CARTWRIGHT and WHISKEY SOUR. Both have had decent spins on the flat recently and both were very decent novice hurdlers last season. The fact that they are trained by Messrs Elliott and Mullins respectably can only be good news too!

Whiskey Sour was third in the County Hurdle and has won twice on the level here as well.

If the cheekpieces have a positive effect then JER’S GIRL could prove the pick of the outsiders.
