Glorious Goodwood 2018 – Day 5 Tips

It’s the last day of the Goodwood Festival today and it features the Stewards Cup and the Consolation Race, both over 6 furlongs.

Unibet Stewards’ Cup Handicap

Neither race looks a vintage renewal and we had a shortlist of six for the main event at 3.40pm. They include the first three in the handicap and the top two, GIFTED MASTER and SPRING LOADED, make particular appeal.

Gifted Master is a front runner who stays six furlongs well, but who has the speed for a track like this. He proved he acts around here when third in a much better race than this – the Lennox – two seasons ago.

Spring Loaded has looked in prime form in his two starts so far this season and he could be a Group horse in the making. He has Ryan Moore in the saddle to help him and this easy six furlongs should be within his range.

Of those drawn on the other side of the track, Tis Marvellous is respected, but better value may lie with SILENT ECHO and GLENAMOY LAD.

Silent Echo has been a revelation this season and continued his fine form when 5th in the Wokingham. He is actually 2lbs better off here so must run a big race if able to re-produce his Royal Ascot effort.

Glenamoy Lad has yet to run so far this campaign, but he looked a sprinter to follow last season and his trainer, Michael Wigham, is confident he has him ready for his re-appearance. He could be dangerously well handicapped.

Ladbrokes are offering six places for each-way bets on this race.

Qatar Stewards’ Sprint Handicap

The Consolation Race – the Stewards Sprint – is full of apparently out of form sprinters, but the one who stands out for us is GOLDEN STEPS. He won the race in 2015 off of a much higher mark and has been running into form for Jim Goldie recently.

MAAKAASIB is the other one to back as he looks like one of only a few in the field that could still be on an upward curve. Simon Crisford has been having a great season and hopefully this horse can bring the pick of his all weather form to the turf this afternoon.

Qatar Summer Handicap

The Summer Handicap is another competitive looking heat at 2.25pm.

Of the market leaders, WALTON STREET appeals most as he looks ready for this step up in distance. He stayed on really in the closing stages last time out in a very good race at Royal Ascot.

In terms of the dangers, Mark Johnston looks set to have a big say in proceedings given the number of runners he saddles and pick of them could be SOLDIER IN ACTION who loves it around here. He has been out of form all season, but won this race last year off of a 9lbs higher mark.

Ladbrokes are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

Qatar Gordon Stakes

The other race on ITV is the Group 3 Gordon Stakes where there are only four runners, including Derby runner up Dee Ex Bee. That horse hasn’t quite reached those heights in two races since Epsom so we are going to take him on with CROSS COUNTER, who seems to be peaking at the right time for this.
