Michael Gove has been cut from 11/1 to 7/1 with Bet365 to be the next leader of the Conservative Party after a leading Tory donor called for the Environment Secretary to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister. Hedge Fund manager Crispin Odey, who donated £50,000 to the Tories prior to last year’s botched General Election, believes May has proved herself unable to “carry Brexit through” and urged the party to ditch her in favour of a prominent Leave campaigner.
Odey, who also backed the Leave campaign, has tipped Gove as the man to take a more confrontational approach to negotiations with the European Union and follow Italy’s lead in vowing to breach agreements with the EU if the organisation is not more flexible in the future. The market is still headed by Jacob Rees-Mogg, the backbench MP and leader of the anti-EU European Research Group that is continuing push May for a hard Brexit. Rees-Mogg is a best price of 9/2 with Betfred, while Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Sajid Javid are each at 10s.
