Venue

Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, has staged all six previous editions of this event, which replaced the Buick Invitational on the PGA Tour in 2010. It’s a lengthy par 70 at 7,287 yards, but not the toughest – Stuart Appleby shot a 59 on his way to victory in the inaugural edition. A creek winds through the course, but water isn’t a significant factor until the 16th & 17th holes. Instead the main hazards are tree-lined fairways and carefully placed pot bunkers. Danny Lee is the defending champion although his victory came in 2015 with last year cancelled due to flooding.

Favourites

There are none of the really big names in action this week – so the betting is headed by World number 21 Patrick Reed, who is a best price of 16/1 with Betfred. Bill Haas and Kevin Kisner are both at 18/1 with Coral, who are offering 7 places for each-way bets on the Greenbrier Classic 2017. Phil Mickelson is next up in the market at best odds of 22/1 with Paddy Power – who are also offering 7 places – as he gears up for his bid for a second Open Championship title, having won at Muirfield back in 2013.

Tips

Tony FinauThis is not the strongest of fields and it’s short on players in good form – but TONY FINAU has been posting some solid results and was 13th on his debut at this event two years ago. The World no. 67 has missed only one cut in his last 10 starts, was third in Texas in April and has recorded results of 13-29-40-17-29 at his last five tournaments – in better company than this. He is 25/1 in places, but Coral are offering both 33/1 and those 7 places each-way.

David-HearnCanada’s DAVID HEARN finished as the runner-up the last time this tournament was staged – and has also posted other good results at White Sulphur, finishing 12th and 18th in 2011 & 2012. Two top 10s in his last three outings have boosted his ranking by 50 places – so he should be confident of enjoying himself again at this venue. Just 66/1 with various bookmakers this week, Betfred are offering 90/1 – just too tempting a price for an in-form player with course form.

Kevin-StreelmanKEVIN STREELMAN was one of our selections at the Quicken Loans National last week and he finished just five shots off the pace, in 17th place on a congested leaderboard. His recent run of results, which now reads 18-13-8-17, makes him one of the form players in this field – and there is no reason why he can’t continue his purple patch and get in the mix again. Betfair and Paddy Power are each quoting 45/1 with 7 places each-way.
