Lewis Hamilton is the 4/9 favourite to win the Formula One Drivers Championship after a dominant performance at the French Open on Sunday. The defending world champion led for all but one lap as the race returned after a 10-year absence from the calendar, and took full advantage of an early mistake from Sebastian Vettel to open up a 14-point lead in the standings.
With Hamilton getting away strongly from pole position, Vettel collided with the Englishman’s Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas as he attempted to overtake on the first bend. It left the German at the back of the field and with a five-second penalty for causing the incident, and although he recovered to finish fifth, the error still proved costly. Vettel, who last won the title in 2013, is at 2/1 across the board in the title betting. Next up is the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg next weekend, a race which Vettel has yet to win. Bottas won last year’s race, with Hamilton the victor in 2016. The British Grand Prix at Silverstone follows a week later.
