Watford have appointed the former Malaga coach Javi Gracia as their new manager after the surprise sacking of Marco Silva on Sunday.
Silva paid the price for a run of 8 defeats in 11 league games, the latest being Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Leicester. He leaves Vicarage Road with the Hornets still in the top half of the table, but the club’s owners have acted after becoming increasingly concerned with the Portuguese’s apparent lack of focus after Everton’s attempts to take him to Goodison Park in the autumn.
Gracia will take charge of a team which is just four points above the relegation zone, with a crucial trip to Stoke up next after their FA Cup fourth round tie at Southampton. The bookmakers don’t believe Watford are in immediate danger, with William Hill, Paddy Power and Betfred offering them at 9/1 to go down, but they were a 33/1 chance as recently as New Year’s Eve.
