Donald Trump’s candidacy for the United States Presidency has seen him offend Mexicans, war veterans, muslims and women and still retain the support of his party and perform well in the polls.
However, the videos leaked on Friday in which he appears to champion sexual assault were the final straw for many of his beleaguered Republican Party backers and many punters will be wondering if it is time for an insurance bet on his running mate Mike Pence, who is a 100/1 shot with Paddy Power.
If Trump is forced to stand down – and there are rumours of more ruinous archive footage yet to be released – then Pence is the most likely candidate to assume his party’s nomination for next month’s election. It’s worth remembering that when he somehow managed to stay free of controversy for a few weeks in the summer, Trump edged ahead in some polls and briefly went as short as 5/4 with Betfred.
He’s now out to 11/2 at Betfair, with Hillary Clinton at just 1/6 with Unibet, but the Democrat candidate is deeply unpopular with much of the electorate too. If Trump steps aside, his replacement would have a serious chance of defeating Clinton.
