Venue

The third edition of the Maybank Championship sees a second visit to the Saujana Golf and Country Club on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. Carved out of an oil palm plantation, the 7,186-yard Palm Course features water hazards on seven holes, steeply sloping rugged terrain and fairways lined with dense clusters of palms. As such it should be a test of precision rather than brute strength, while the hot and humid weather is an additional factor. Australia’s Marcus Fraser won the inaugural edition at Selangor in 2016, while Fabrizio Zanotti was the champion at this venue last year. Prior to being co-sanctioned by the European Tour, this was an Asian Tour event known as the Carlsberg Malaysian Open and was won twice here by Thongchai Jaidee, who finished just outside the top 10 a year ago.

Favourites

Henrik Stenson has recorded back-to-back top 10 finishes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai to start his year and the world number 10 is the 8/1 favourite with Coral for this tournament in Malaysia. By finishing seventh and fourth in the last two weeks, Alexander Levy has made a marginally better start to 2018 than Stenson and the in-form Frenchman is the 16/1 second favourite, also with Coral – who are offering 7 places for each-way bets. Bernd Wiesberger, who has been playing beautifully from tee to green but has lacked a clinical touch with his putter, is at 20/1 with the same firm, with the Dubai champion Li Haotong at the same price with Stan James. Dylan Frittelli shared sixth place the weekend as one of our three selections and the talented South African is a 25/1 chance with Coral.

Tips

Nobody has made a better start to the year than CHRIS PAISLEY, who claimed his maiden European Tour victory at the SA Open before finishing fifth in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The Englishman made a promising start to 2017 before his form tailed off, but his exploits in January have lifted him more than 200 places to what is comfortably his highest world ranking and he must be bursting with confidence right now. Betfred are offering 33/1 and six places.

JEUNGHUN WANG gave us a 35/1 winning selection at the Qatar Masters a year ago, since when the South Korean has been slipping slowly down the world rankings from a career-high of 39th. He’s now just outside the world’s top 100, but he’s played some great golf over the last couple of weeks, sharing 15th place in Abu Dhabi before tying for sixth in Dubai. He’s back in the groove and is 33/1 with those seven places at Coral.

DAVID LIPSKY was second to Zanotti here 12 months ago and will be returning in high spirits after his fine performance in Dubai, where he flew under the radar before tying for sixth place. The American has won on the European Tour, in Switzerland in 2014, while he recorded a career-best seven top 10 finishes in 2016. More than half of his career top 10s have come in Asia, and he’s an appealing each-way pick at 50/1 with six places at Stan James.
