Conor McGregor must weigh up his options after his return to UFC action ended in defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov in an explosive encounter in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
An 11/8 outsider before the contest, McGregor was forced to tap out in the fourth round by his Russian opponent, who then immediately sparked fighting in the crowd by leaping out of the cage to take on a member of McGregor’s entourage.
One possibility is that the Irishman now calls time on his career, although it will be difficult for him to resist the temptation of a rematch with boxing great Floyd Mayweather, although this time under MMA rules. Negotiations have stalled, but with the potential for such a huge purse there’s a very real prospect of a deal being struck.
Just as Mayweather was initially a huge favourite when the two men met in the boxing ring, McGregor would be a short price in the more familiar surroundings of the Octagon. If the Mayweather talks prove fruitless, McGregor has other UFC options, such as Nate Diaz, Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre.
