Last week it was announced that Floyd Mayweather Jr would take on the UFC star Conor McGregor in a junior middleweight contest in Las Vegas in August.
It ought to be a foregone conclusion – Mayweather is one of the greatest boxers of all time with a 49-0 unbeaten career record in the sport, while it will be McGregor’s first professional boxing bout.
Yet plenty of money has already changed hands on McGregor Mayweather – the majority on McGregor, who was initially available at 10/1 with Sky Bet, but is now a best of just 5/1 with Unibet & Stan James.
Logic suggests that McGregor, the darling of MMA fans, can’t win – but the weight of money is forcing his price down and maintaining the impression that it could be a fight worthy of 10 weeks of hyperbole.
Mayweather, who has secured more than half of his 49 victories by knockout, is 4/5 with Sky Bet to win this bout in the same manner – and that has to be a good bet.
