Phil Mickelson continues to be backed for April’s Masters tournament after claiming his fifth victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Mickelson, who led by three shots as play was suspended overnight due to darkness, returned on Monday to play his final three holes in one-under par and earn the 50th win of his professional career.
The 48-year-old had a near miss at the Desert Classic last month, where he finished second just one shot behind Adam Long, and he was in no mood to let another chance slip by as he overhauled Paul Casey’s three-shot overnight lead to eventually win by three strokes.
It’s been a remarkable start to 2019 for the veteran, who will go in search of his fourth Green Jacket at Augusta following his successes at the first major of the season in 2004, 2006 and 2010.
