In the immediate aftermath of Manchester United’s latest setback at Anfield on Sunday evening, BetVictor were offering best odds of 2/1* that Jose Mourinho would be the next Premier League manager to leave his post.
With Fulham and Southampton having recently replaced their managers and Sean Dyche having a deep well of goodwill at Burnley thanks to their remarkable performances last season, Mourinho remains the only obvious candidate if there is to be another change over the coming months.
Although United go into the festive fixtures in sixth place, they are 11 points adrift of the Champions League qualification places and just five points clear of Brighton in 13th.
At Anfield they gave the kind of listless performance that was the hallmark of the third season of Mourinho’s second spell at Chelsea and he could meet a similar fate if results continue to go against them.
While his side failed to gather any points from their trip to Merseyside, Mourinho did at least make a point to World Cup-winner Paul Pogba that he can no longer be trusted to influence big matches.
The £90m midfielder was an unused substitute and it’s hard to escape the feeling that Old Trafford is no longer big enough to accommodate both manager and record signing. A parting of the ways feels increasingly likely.
