New Year’s Day Horse Racing Tips

The ITV cameras welcome in the New Year with four races live from the home of jump racing this afternoon, starting with the Grade 2 Dipper Novices Chase.

Dipper Novices’ Chase

Willoughby Court is a worthy favourite back at the scene of his Festival win in March, but has to give weight all round, including to Yanworth, who he beat at Newbury last time out.

A big danger to both could be BALLYANDY, who also ran well here at the Festival when fourth in the Supreme. He’d taken a big handicap hurdle at Newbury on soft ground prior to that and looked capable of achieving even greater heights over fences when winning on his debut at Perth (on heavy). He’s had some problems since, but is reported to be back in form now for his powerful yard.

Ami Desbois is an interesting outsider, but his yard is struggling for winners at the moment.

BetBright Best For Festival Betting Handicap Chase

The best bet of the day could come in the Handicap Chase that follows, where we think BURTONS WELL is the one to beat. He was fancied for a big race at the Festival only to fall when still in contention and compensation awaits here for a horse who is lightly raced enough to still be improving.

He loves heavy ground and his trainer, Venetia Williams, has a fantastic record in this sort of contest.

Sametegal and Ballyhill look the chief dangers.

BetBright Casino Handicap Hurdle

A Handicap Hurdle follows and we wouldn’t put anyone off Arthurs Gift who won a similar race for us here just over a fortnight ago.

At a bigger price, though, BUCKLE STREET may be better value as Martin Keighley’s gelding looks the type to relish a real stamina test.

Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle

The final televised contest is the Relkeel where Colins Sister looks to bag a second big race for trainer Fergal O’Brien in the space of a few days. The prize looks likely to go to her or Wholestone, and narrow preference is for WHOLESTONE given the slightly bigger price and the fact that he has run so many good races here in the past.
