There’s a fascinating match in the Premier League relegation battle next weekend as Newcastle United host Cardiff at St James’ Park. Newcastle have slipped into the bottom three following victories for both Burnley and Southampton on Saturday, while Cardiff are one place and one point above them after being held to a goalless draw by bottom club Huddersfield.
The bookmakers see very little prospect of Huddersfield recovering from their current predicament, with Bet365 offering best odds of just 1/16* on David Wagner’s side to be relegated. Fulham, meanwhile, are a 2/5* chance with Betfred after suffering another defeat when they went down 2-1 at Turf Moor.
Cardiff are next in the firing line, with the pre-season favourites to finish bottom of the league a best price of 4/6* with Bet365 to go down.
Newcastle have plenty to be concerned about, however, after a run of one win in nine games and further frustration for manager Rafa Benitez in the transfer market.
The Spaniard managed to dig them out of similar trouble last season and is given a strong chance of doing so again by the bookies. Nearly all firms quote them at 5/2* in the relegation betting.
