Several likely members of the European team got a taste of the venue for September’s Ryder Cup match at the Open de France and it was one of them, Alex Noren, who surged through the field to take the title at Le Golf National.
The brilliant Swede, a 16/1 pre-tournament chance, looked to be out of the running after narrowly making the cut on Friday evening, but a superb round of 65 put him back into the picture on Saturday and he followed it with a closing round of 67 to win by one shot from the trio of Russell Knox, Julian Suri and Chris Wood. Noren looks certain to make his Ryder Cup debut in Paris in a couple of months’ time and he’s likely to joined in the team by the Spanish duo of Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, who both finished in the top 10.
It wasn’t such a good week for Tommy Fleetwood, however, as the defending champion missed the cut. The United States team were not well represented, but Justin Thomas took advantage of his opportunity to learn more about this difficult course as he shared eighth place with Garcia. Thomas and his American colleagues are the Evens* favourites with Ladbrokes to win the Ryder Cup, with Europe a best price of 6/5* with Bet365 and Betfred.
