Ronnie O’Sullivan is the joint favourite for this week’s Champion of Champions tournament despite suffering a 6-1 defeat to teenager Yan Bingtao in the first round of the International Championship in China last week.
O’Sullivan, who won the English Open a fortnight ago, didn’t pot a ball in the final four frames against Yan, but put his defeat down to the 17-year-old’s excellence rather than any failing in his own game.
Paddy Power make O’Sullivan and world champion Mark Selby the 9/2 co-favourites to win at the Ricoh Arena, where Selby will make his first appearance in front of the ITV4 cameras on Wednesday – once he returns from retaining his International Championship title in Daqing. Judd Trump is third in the 16-man market at 5/1 with most bookmakers, with Ding Junhui a 15/2 chance with Bet365.
The Champion of Champions event returned to the schedule four years ago and after two titles for O’Sullivan it has been won by Neil Robertson and John Higgins, who defeated The Rocket 10-7 in the final 12 months ago. The Scot can be backed at best odds of 8/1 with Paddy Power to mount a successful defence at the Ricoh.
