A double from Alfredo Morelos kept Rangers in touch with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership ahead of the Old Firm derby at Ibrox next Saturday.
The Colombian striker struck twice in the second half as Steven Gerrard’s side hit back from a goal down to win 2-1 at St Johnstone.
The Gers remain a point behind Celtic at the top of the table, although the champions have a game in hand.
However, this is the first time they have been given a run for their money since Rangers were banished from the top flight six years ago.
Since that time the Gers have won only one of 14 Old Firm meetings, when they emerged victorious after a penalty shoot-out in the 2016 Scottish Cup final.
They lost four of five meetings last season and were beaten 1-0 at Celtic Park in September in the first league meeting of the current campaign.
