Royal Ascot 2018 – Day 1 Tips

Day one of Royal Ascot 2018 kicks off with an open looking renewal of the Queen Anne Stakes, where there doesn’t seem to be as much between the bulk of the runners as the bookies suggest.

Queen Anne Stakes

With plenty of the layers also offering four places, this looks a race to try to bag a big price winner early and one outsider we like is ACCIDENTAL AGENT, who we tipped in the Lockinge last time out. He was only a handful of lengths behind Rhododendron and Lightning Spear that day, and was doing all his best work in the closing stages, so he looks overpriced now back on a track that suits him even better.

Yoshida (who’ll love the ground) and Zonderland were also shortlisted, but LORD GLITTERS is the other interesting one for us, although the going is a worry. All of his racing has been done with give underfoot, but he looked a Group horse in the making when travelling supremely well in the Lincoln on his only start so far this season. Time has shown that he had an impossible task trying to give lumps of weight to the winner that day.

Of the market principles, BENBATL looks the pick as he has some excellent form here and seems to have gone to a new level this campaign based on his efforts in Dubai over the spring.

King’s Stand Stakes

The second Group 1 on the card is the King’s Stand Stakes and Godolphin look to have another stand out contender here in BLUE POINT. He seemed to be suited to 5f when dropping back in trip at Meydan in February and also looked full of pace when winning here over a furlong further at the backend of last season.

With market leaders Lady Aurelia and Battaash looking beatable, this is another contest where a surprise winner is possible and the big price runner we like best here is the filly MABS CROSS.

Trainer Michael Dodds has a great record with sprinters (especially fillies) and this horse is climbing the sprinting ladder fast. She missed the break behind Battaash last time out, but this stiff 5f will suit provided the ground isn’t too quick.

Gifted Master is another to consider.

St James’s Palace Stakes

The day’s big race is the St James’s Palace Stakes and John Gosden looks to hold all the aces here.

WITHOUT PAROLE is improving fast and this son of Frankel looked a potential champion in the making when winning both of his first two starts by 6 lengths. His handler thinks he will come on considerably for his win in a listed race last time out.

The chances of his stablemate, KINGS SHIELD, are less obvious, but the ground could be the key to him. He wasn’t beaten far in the French 2,000 Guineas and the soft ground was all against him at Epsom last time out.

Coventry Stakes

The meeting’s first two year old contest is the Coventry at 3.05pm and look out here for some bookies offering five places.

The market is dominated by Calyx and Sergei Prokofiev who boast outstanding form for outstanding trainers, but with so many potential improvers in the line-up it surely makes sense to oppose them.

The trio we like are INDIGO BALANCE, who beat a subsequent winner at the Curragh in a race that is working out well form-wise, FOX CHAMPION, for a master handler of two year olds (he was only beaten by the soft ground on his debut) and VANGE who won a race at Chester last time out that was won last year by the runner up in this race.

Others to consider include Barbill, Gee Rex and Blown By Wind.

Ascot Stakes

Our tips in the Ascot Stakes are DANNYDAY, MERI DEVIE and WHITE DESERT, whilst it is hard to find an angle in the Wolferton.
