Royal Ascot 2018 – Day 4 Tips

The Albany Stakes, which opens day four of Royal Ascot, look set to be dominated by in-form trainers Mark Johnston and Aiden O’Brien as each has a pair of runners that look to have decent chances.

Albany Stakes

Of the quartet, MAIN EDITION looks the one to focus on as she clearly stays this trip very well and could be really hard to peg back from the front. She has won her two starts to date in decisive fashion.

JUST WONDERFUL looks the pick of the Irish pair and a reverse forecast featuring the two selections could bear fruit.

King Edward VII Stakes

The “Royal Ascot Derby”, the King Edward, is next and it is no surprise to see the O’Brien camp well represented here too.

DELANO ROOSEVELT was our main hope for the Epsom Derby but he disappointed slightly there when finishing sixth. However, we saw with Magic Wand yesterday how O’Brien can get a horse to bounce back from the Epsom Classics and, like Magic Wand, Delano Roosevelt will surely like the better ground here. He looks worth one last chance.

Raa Atoll is respected, but with a decent swing in the weights compared to when they last met Elector looks better value and could prove to be a typical Sir Michael Stoute improver. But of those at fancy prices there’s also surely more to come from HIGHBROW who wasn’t suited by a slow pace when last seen in action at Goodwood.

Commonwealth Cup

The Commonwealth Cup, a relatively new edition to the Royal Ascot programme, follows and this is a real speed test for three year olds.

Favourite Equilateral could be anything, but he looks short enough in such a large, competitive field given his inexperience, so a safer option looks to be market rival, SIOUX NATION. He beat stablemate Fleet Review in a Group 3 at Naas last time out when giving that rival weight and the fact he has won here before is another plus.

The main danger could prove to be LAUGH A MINUTE, who is surely due some luck in running having been badly hampered in recent starts. He has to prove he handles ground this fast, but he ticks plenty of other boxes and should be picking plenty of rivals off close home.

Don’t rule out American raider, GIDU, either. He loves fast ground and has been showing plenty of pace in races over longer trips in his homeland. His proven combination of speed and stamina could see him sneak a place here at least at big odds, whilst another to consider at a monster price is ENJAZAAT.

Coronation Stakes

There’s another Group 1 at 4.20pm in the shape of the Coronation Stakes and it features the 1,000 Guineas winners from Britain, Ireland and France. However, if she’s back to her best CLEMMIE surely has the ability to beat that trio. Aiden O’Brien still thinks he hasn’t got her 100% right, but she has, apparently, come on a lot for her recent comeback and this mile trip should really suit her.

If there any flaws in the main selection then the in-form THREADING looks the one most likely to exploit them. This filly really came back to her best with a bang at York last time out and trip and ground look perfect for her.
