Co-hosts Australia are the 1/4 favourites to win the Rugby League World Cup 2017, which gets under way with their group clash with England this Friday morning. Australia are utterly dominant in the 13-man game, winning 10 of the 14 previous editions of this tournament, while they have reached every final bar the first, back in 1954.
The Kangaroos are no bigger than 1/14 to reach the final and realistically it’s a question of who will join them, with New Zealand and England the most serious contenders.
New Zealand, who share home advantage with their neighbours as well as Papua New Guinea, are Evens with Betfred and Unibet to face them in a fourth successive final, while England are a 5/4 chance with Paddy Power and Betfair to reach the final for the first time since 1995.
The two nations met in the semi-finals four years ago, with New Zealand winning 20-18 at Wembley. Tonga, who have 7 Super League players in their ranks, are seen as the best of the outsiders and are 6/1 with Betfred to reach the final. Tonga won 2 of their 3 games at the World Cup four years ago – yet still failed to reach the last eight.
