It was a weekend of little change in the Premier League relegation battle, as Newcastle’s third successive win lifted them up to 10th place and meant that none of teams now making up the bottom half of the table were able to pick up three points. However, defeats for Southampton and Stoke, against Arsenal and Tottenham respectively, have pushed them deeper into trouble as Crystal Palace, Huddersfield, Swansea, West Ham and Brighton all edged closer to safety.
With games running out, Stoke now find themselves four points inside the relegation zone while Southampton, who have a game in hand on the Potters, need to bridge a three-point gap over the closing month of the season. Stoke’s last two games of the season are against Palace and Swansea, but it may be too late by then and William Hill make them a best price of just 1/4 to go down. Ladbrokes, Betfred and BetVictor are all offering Evens about Southampton, who have won only one of their last 19 games and have some difficult fixtures still to come, including visits from Chelsea and Manchester City. That looks a better bet than Huddersfield, who are 5/4 with BetVictor.
