Saturday Horse Racing Tips

The Ladbroke Chase is the big race at Newbury today, but could easily be upstaged by a fascinating clash over hurdles at Newcastle where the Fighting Fifth sees Samcro take on reigning Champion Hurdler Buveur D’Air and Supreme winner Summerville Boy.

BetVictor Fighting Fifth Hurdle

It feels like the moment of truth for SAMCRO and he surely needs to win today if he is to have a serious chance of taking Buveur D’Air’s crown off of him. Nicky Henderson’s charge had a wind operation over the summer, but could be vulnerable here on his seasonal re-appearance. He also hasn’t had too many serious rivals taking him on in recent years, but this season could be a different story.

All in all, we expect Samcro to win and VISION DES FLOS could also surprise a few people with race fitness on his side and might be worth backing each way or in a dual forecast in the hope of a decent return.

BetVictor Rehearsal Handicap Chase

The other big race at Newcastle is the Rehearsal Chase and it sees a number of promising young chasers taking on more experienced rivals.

We think the less exposed types will win the day and in the end we have plumped for BIG RIVER and AMI DEBOIS, who narrowly got the verdict ahead of  Ballydine and Sharp Response.

Big River has had some health issues, but showed enough potential last year to suggest he can win a big race off of a mark like this.

Ami Debois also clearly had some issues at the back end of last season as he was pulled up on his last two starts. However, he won his first two chases before that and his current mark over fences is way below the level he reached over hurdles, suggesting there is plenty of scope for improvement.

Ladbrokes Trophy Chase

The Ladbroke Chase is also dominated by second season chasers including Elegant Escape, who has earned his place at the head of the market. However, he also has to give weight to all bar one of his rivals, which won’t be easy especially in a race where a case can be made for all 13 runners.

Given the further rain that has arrived, we are going to side with MISS PARFOIS, who has already beaten the favourite once and actually meets him on better terms here. She is another who had a wind operation in the close season and is a really strong stayer, so the three and a quarter mile trip will play to her strengths. She is a course winner and her trainer is one of the best up and coming handlers around. This has been her target for some time.

In terms of those at bigger prices, FLYING ANGEL and ALLYSSON MONTERG are of most interest.

Flying Angel has slipped down the weights and is dangerously well treated as a result. His stamina is unproven, but he ran well at Ascot just over a week ago and his yard often has outsiders run well in these big races.

Allysson Monterg is a horse we’ve followed for a while and have tipped him on a couple of occasions in the past. He should be capable of taking higher rank over fences as he has the look of a horse that will improve physically with time. Again, it is a case of the more rain the better for him.

Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle

The other big betting heat of the day at the Berkshire traak is the Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle, where 15 go to post.

Of the fancied runners, Padleyourowncanoe looks interesting now stepped back up in trip, but in the hope of a shock we are going to suggest backing the bottom three in the weights.

MAN OF PLENTY has run many decent races in big field handicaps over recent seasons and seems to have returned better than ever this campaign. He’ll like this longer trip and was unlucky in running in the Greatwood last time out.

By contrast, VAZIANI and LE MUSEE are young hurdlers with plenty of scope for improvement. They will both like the softening ground.

Vaziani has been crying out for this longer distance, whilst Le Musee ran better than his finishing position suggested on his comeback at Cheltenham recently.
