Saturday Horse Racing Tips

Aiden Coleman looks the man to follow at Doncaster this afternoon, where conditions will certainly suit horses who enjoy decent ground.

888Sport Bet 10 Get 30 Handicap Chase

In the second race on the card, Coleman takes the mount on the Richard Newland trained THEO, who loves good ground. This is a drop in class for the nine year old having run in Grade 2s on his last couple of starts. He also goes well fresh and so looks to have plenty in his favour this afternoon.

888Sport Take ‘Em On Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle

A mares’ hurdle follows, and we had really fancied Lucy Wadham’s Shantung, but she’s a non-runner.

Instead we’ll take a punt on the outsider ROSIE AND MILLIE. She had some decent point to point form and could be in her element in this staying contest.

888Sport Grimthorpe Handicap Chase

The most valuable race on the Doncaster card is the Grimthorpe Handicap over 3m 2f, and LOOKING WELL can hopefully continue a stellar day for Coleman here. Nicky Richard’s charge is one of the north’s better staying chasers and he absolutely bounces off ground like this. He could easily have won his last two races had he not fallen on his penultimate start and he seldom runs a bad race when conditions are in his favour.

The big danger is the classy BARNEY DWAN, who has had no luck this season. He was very badly hampered at Kempton last time out and is interesting now upped further in trip.

Greatwood Veterans’ Handicap Chase

There’s an excellent card at Newbury too where it is Greatwood day and ABOLITIONIST looks the one to beat in the veterans’ chase at 2.40pm. He had some good form in Ireland before switching to Richard Newland’s yard and looked to have improved when winning over hurdles on his stable debut.

His long term aim is the Grand National and a veteran from that race, THE LAST SAMURI, is the big danger here. He seems to have been revitalised by a change of stable and a wind operation.

Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase

In the Greatwood Gold Cup we are going to take a chance on the lightly raced, but injury prone, VALDEZ. Those injuries have stopped him fulfilling his potential, but he has shown glimpses of his best over the last couple of seasons and he continues to tumble down the handicap.

DUSTIN DES MOTTES is another Newland runner worth backing, whilst the bottom weight, ZALVADOS, shouldn’t be discounted either as he looks ready for this step up in trip over fences.

There are plenty of dangers including Javert and War Sound.
