Saturday Horse Racing Tips

It looks like there will be vastly different ground conditions as Ascot and Haydock today – two of three meetings on the main ITV channel this afternoon.

Punters can also enjoy some fascinating action on the all-weather from Kempton, where last year’s superstar filly, Enable, returns to face one of this season’s best middle distance performers, Crystal Ocean.

First to Haydock, where the ground is already turning heavy, with more rain forecast.

That will make the opening race a real stamina test for the three year olds and that may suit SOTO SIZZLER, who looked to have more to offer over staying trips when winning on his handicap debut at Goodwood last time out. With his dam being by Barathea, he should be able to cope with the ground.

Elegiac, who has already won on soft, looks the danger.

Unibet Mile

There’s a Group 3 at 2.25pm and for us it looks to be between the top three, with the favourite, Regal Reality, potentially vulnerable in the conditions.

Emmaus is his main market rival, but in the end we have plumped for the other two, both of whom are proven mudlarks.

HERE COMES WHEN took the Sussex Stakes on similar ground last season and has been waiting for the rain to arrive, whilst CIRCUS COUTURE has put up some encouraging performances for new connections this season. This is the first time he will have run for them on the heavy ground that he has won on before in his native Italy.

There’s another staying contest at 3.35pm and we are going to tip up COSMELLI again after he took the Northumberland Plate for us two starts back at a massive price. He struggled at Chester last time out, but has won on heavy before.

Also take a chance on the veteran, CLEVER COOKIE, who is finally starting to come down the weights. His form figures are uninspiring, but he wasn’t been beaten far in a number of better races earlier in the season.

The feature race at Haydock is the Sprint Cup and Harry Angel is a hot favourite to complete back to back wins in the race. Last season’s triumph came on very soft ground, but he played up at the stalls last time out and is worth opposing given the fancy prices that are available about most of his rivals.

TASLEET chased Harry Angel home last season and looks the main danger again here. He has been off since May, but the ground has come right for him. He looks a massive each way player.

At bigger prices, both SPEAK IN COLOURS and DONJUAN TRIUMPHANT are worth backing, in the hope of a shock. They should relish conditions, and the latter has very good course form and comes from a yard that is red hot at the moment.

Cunard Handicap

Meanwhile, over at Ascot, there is another of the valuable, big field handicaps over seven furlongs that the track stages throughout the summer and here we are again going to turn to the maestro trainer, David Elsworth.

RIPP ORF won for us over course and distance earlier in the campaign and subsequent runs have suggested he may still be ahead of the handicapper. The excellent Jason Watson takes a very handy 3lbs off today.

There are plenty of dangers, including another course winner, ZHUI FENG. He loves to go from the front and the drop back to 7 furlongs might be just what he needs based on his latest outing over a mile. He could be hard to peg back.

The other one to back is GILGAMESH, who can surely win a big race before the end of the season. His style of running means he needs plenty of luck during the race, which he hasn’t had recently. Hopefully, the king of Ascot’s straight mile, Jamie Spencer, can work his magic today.

Lavazza Stakes

The other televised race from the Berkshire track is the Lavazza Stakes.

Of the fancied runners, we like Ghostwatch and MIDI. Slight preference is for the beautifully bred Midi, who may have the greater improvement in him.

Pick of the outsiders could be ALTERNATIVE FACT, who looks worth another go at this trip.

‘London Mile’ Handicap

The clash between Enable and Crystal Ocean at Kempton is a race to watch, especially now Weekender is a non runner, but the London Mile is certainly worth a look from a punting perspective and the one we like here is PTARMIGAN RIDGE, who can hopefully improve for the step up to a mile.

The Warrior is one of a number of dangers.
