Saturday Horse Racing Tips

There are four races on ITV from Sandown this afternoon and they represent a good opportunity for punters to steal some ammunition ahead of the Cheltenham Festival next week given the large fields and value on offer.

National Hunt Novices Handicap Hurdle Final

First up is the EBF Final and given that it is literally possible to make a case for all 18 runners, it is probably worth backing a few at bigger prices.

Two we like are at the foot of the weights and both SOUTHERN SAM and GOLDEN WHISKEY look strong stayers, which will be key in this rain softened ground.

Southern Sam comes from an in form yard that has gone close in this race before and his form ties in well with a few of these, whilst Golden Whiskey really improved for the step up in trip last time out.

Another in form trainer is Lucy Wadham and her ADMIRAL BARRATY is the other one to back. This horse looks the sort to continue to improve with racing and a thorough stamina test could bring out the best in him too.

There are dangers everywhere, including the likes of Russian Hawk and Muratello.

William Hill are offering 7 places for each-way bets on this race.

Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle

Next up is the Imperial Cup, where our old favourite, SPEREDEK, returns to hurdles. He looks on a very workable mark over the smaller obstacles and a stiff two mile trip on soft ground should be perfect. The only worry is that Totterdown might not leave him alone up front.

In the absence of Extra Mag and Solomon Grey, the other one to back is the classy FIRST FLOW. He was one of the best novices around last season, but ran poorly in the Supreme. He hasn’t been seen since, but loves soft ground and could still have more to offer over hurdles before restarting a chase career that had to be aborted earlier in the season due to a slight injury.

Mares’ Standard Open NH Flat Race

A listed mares’ bumper follows and we are going to support the Lucy Wadham runner again here as EASTER GOLD could represent some each way value. She wouldn’t have to improve much to be in the mix today based on her three starts to date and if she comes on for her seasonal reappearance she could overturn recent Ascot form with one of the favourites here, Silver Forever.

The other one we like is BRIERY EXPRESS for a trainer that does well in this sort of race. She too has form with Silver Forever and can beat that mare today now faced with a stronger stamina test.

‘Best Value Exchange’ Handicap Chase

The chasers close the show and AMI DESBOIS is the one to beat in this three mile contest after his fine effort here last time out. Of the market leaders, he just gets the nod ahead of the unexposed Commodore who is feared after bouncing back to form following a wind operation.

Amongst those at slightly bigger prices, BOB MAHLER is narrowly preferred to Salmamazar. He looks well treated over fences and surely has a nice prize in him over the larger obstacles.
